Economical- How does the Singapore government make bus and mrt prices affordable for the average person?
One way that the Singapore government is planning for the future is making the mrt prices affordable for everyone. The graph below indicates that 8 out of 10 people travel on public transport and think that is is affordable to take. The main way that the Singapore government is keeping public transport affordable is by using a Fare Adjustment Formula. “The Fare Formula is the principle that fares should be kept affordable while ensuring the commercial viability and sustainability of the public transport operators” (MOT). The MOT also developed fare concessions for commuters such as national service men, students, people with disabilities and low paid service men. This policy is designed to make public transport fares affordable and sustainable for citizens.
Social- how does public transport connect communities together?
Through the integration of trains stations directly into shopping malls, and community centres, it has become easier for people from across Singapore to combine business and social activities in these centralised gathering points. As you can see in the image below of the Singapore MRT stations, there are train stations covering the majority of Singapore, this is so that more people can take it to many places around Singapore. With many social groups and a growing population, Singapore needs to cater for everyone.
