On January 28, 1986, America was at a loss when the space shuttle Challenger exploded during take off. The seven people on flight lost their lives, including a teacher. This was a shock to the world since this was the first time America has lost people in flight. At 5 p.m that day, President Reagan went live on radio and television to address the tragedy that occurred. During his speech, President Reagan did his job to comfort the nation in time of tragedy.
This speech is to the American people, but also to families who lost loved ones in the explosion. He also makes sure to bring up the schoolkids since this was the first flight where a teacher was on board. He says, “We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country.” this phrase here connects him to the people of America who are mourning.
