The 5 whys technique was developed within the Toyota motor corporation as critical component of its problem-solving training. Taiichi Ohno, architecture of the Toyota production system describe this method as, by repeating ‘why’ five times, the nature of the problem as well as its solution becomes clear. (Serrat, 2017)
Benefits of the 5 whys technique are, help identify the root cause of problem, determine the relationship between different root causes of problem and easy to complete without statistical analysis. This technique can be used for troubleshooting, quality improvement and problem solving but it is most effective when used to resolve simple or moderately difficult problems.
