William Shakespeare has written many plays that include all types of genres such as comedies, romances, and even tragedies. He has a certain structure for each type of genre and is very commonly used, that people tend to know what type of genre it is based on how he wrote. When Shakespeare writes a comedy, they mostly end in a marriage and when a tragedy play is written, it ends in a death of the character. However, there are plays that people are indecisive about the genre due to the fact that he may have included a little bit of a certain genre and a little bit of another genre. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is an example of these plays since he included different aspects of all the genres he has written. This play inhibits many components of a comedic genre such as fairies, desperate loves, play-within-a-play, a “death”, a flower that causes love at fight sight, bad actors and mistaken identities. While reading this play, one would assume this play is a tragedy or a romance due to the couples all being happily married to their true love and a tragedy because of the play that happened within the play. These moments, make the audience believe it would be anything, besides a comedy. This play is a true comedy since he includes role reversal with the main characters and the actors, the use of situational irony, and the use of character comedy/physical comedy.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play that involves four young lovers who fall in and out of love with each other due to the special flower being in the wrong hands. It all started out with Hermia being in love with Lysander, however, Egeus, Hermia’s dad wanted her to marry Demetrius. Hermia wasn’t happy about this but still went out with Lysander, in fact, her friend Helena had a crush on Demetrius, the guy that Hermia was supposed to marry. Egeus wasn’t happy that Helena was disobeying him, so they went to inform the duke and ended up telling Hermia that she will be executed for disobeying her father’s wishes. After all this happen, Hermia decided to run away with Lysander and Helena was jealous of Hermia because all the guys were in love with her. Helena decided to tell Demetrius, so at the end all of them ended up going in the woods. While these four young lovers were in the wood, Puck was also there who is a prankster and tends to pull jokes on everyone. He decided to make Demetrius fall in love with Helena with the permission of Oberon, the King of Fairies however, he accidentally makes Lysander fall in love with Hermia’s friend Helena.
